folks are dumb where I come from

Every country breeds people who aren't the most educationally gifted. We need these people in society to do various jobs that others aren't keen on, whether that's a trade or collecting our bins or picking up glasses in nightclubs. But in Australia, we like to vote them into government. NSW backs crackdown on negative betting THE minister responsible for gambling in NSW, George Souris, has thrown his support behind a crackdown on ''negative exotic betting'' over the internet, which the state government believes is threatening the integrity of professional sport. Responding to comments by the new Minister for Sport, Graham Annesley, in his inaugural speech in the NSW Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Souris said he was determined to pursue a solution at a meeting of state and federal ministers later this month. Mr Souris said the government wanted to ''promote, with the Commonwealth, a need for a national agreement with all the states so … compliance ...

utterly daft polticians

How ridiculous is a ban on online poker and casinos in a country where the law is openly flaunted, play-for-fun (.net) sites are widely promoted and companies like PokerStars have offices set up there? Australia upholds online gaming ban This is the dilemma in Australia where companies such as Betfair, Centrebet and Sportingbet offer licensed and regulated poker and casino services to punters outside Australia, but by law, can't do so to Australian residents. Yet, the likes of Party Poker and PokerStars can openly advertisely their wares around the nation by sponsoring events and TV coverage through their 'free' sites. Only the extremely daft amongt us, namely Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, believes that these companies do not generate any real money business via this advertising. Australia is one of the biggest markets for foreign poker firms, so all the profits from these companies goes offshore and stays there. This is the same daft politician who is hel...

French govt now making up laws as they go...

And you thought your politicians/courts were hopeless! (Applies to just about every nation in the world) 'Rights Recognition' Lands Unibet €1.2m French Fine Unibet has become the first victim of the highly controversial ‘sports betting right’ which is yet to be formally adopted in France, but which has been retroactively applied to the online gaming and betting operator by a Paris court this week. As a result, Unibet must now pay €300,000 to the Roland Garros tennis tournament in recognition of the ownership right, in addition to a further €900,000 in penalties. So a law which hasn't been introduced yet and will never receive EU approval now says Unibet has to hand over 1.2m euro for something which happened in the past. Funnily enough, Unibet will be challenging the decision.

NSW govt just can't stop fiddling with a supposedly free market

From a Betfair Australia email to affiliates: On 3rd December 2008 the NSW state government passed an Amending Act for the advertising laws in New South Wales, the Amending Act enables all Australian licensed wagering operators to legally advertise in NSW. The Act included a regulation whereby licensed wagering operators are not permitted to publish gambling advertising that “offers any credit, voucher or reward as an inducement to participate, or to participate frequently, in any gambling activity (including as an inducement to open a betting account)”. In essence, this means that by law Betfair can no longer advertise free bet offers to residents of NSW. It should be noted that the legal onus is on Betfair to comply and that there is no legal risk on the affiliate for displaying a Betfair free bet advertisement to a NSW resident. Additionally, it is the advertising of, rather than the crediting of, a free bet which is now illegal in NSW.... ------ If this restriction applies to all g...

more on the landmark NSW advertising case

Bill Saunders sinks the boots into Racing NSW, the NSW Govt and of course, the king of idiots, Robert Nason. Read the Virtual Formguide article here about the flawed legislation and this one about the NSW Govt's likelihood of being embarrassed in court .

Betfair and Sportingbet take on NSW government

About time too. The ridiculous protectionist advertising laws in NSW are being taken to task in the Federal Court. Read the story here from the Virtual Formguide. What's the betting on NSW getting embarrassed like the WA Govt just a few months ago??

Vic govt finally wakes up, but still falls behind reality

Victorian bookmakers will finally be allowed to take bets 24/7 under new proposals from the state government. But it's still taboo for them to lay horses on Betfair, although EVERYONE ELSE in the entire country is allowed to do it. Seriously, you wonder how any of these idiots managed to get elected.... Herald Sun article They'll still have to be based on a racecourse, venues punters rarely ever attend these days and severely lacking in technological resources or office space. And they'll still only be allowed to advertise in Victoria, if they're lucky...
